As election campaigning for rest phases of polling is on a high peak. Security of religious places and sensitive installations in the border districts of Punjab has been tightened. There are cross border threats to disturb the peace and political atmosphere in the state.
“There is a cross border threat during the ongoing election process for which police had taken adequate preventive measures.” Inspector general of police (border zone) S P S Parmar said. He added that there is always a threat to religious process and police officials and Punjab police are sensitive about that.
Parmar said in the recent past, he held meetings with IGPs of Chamba and Jammu on security-related issues and to strengthen vigil along Punjab border with Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
Punjab will vote in the seventh and last phase on May 19. Polling in all 13 seats of the state will take place in a single phase. In 2014 also the state went for a single-phase poll on April 30.
High security for Sunny’s roadshow
On the political dais, all party leaders have geared up their campaigning for the upcoming polls. Heavy security arrangements were made during the Sunny Deol’s road show in Gurdaspur. Heavy security arrangements were made during a roadshow of BJP-SAD poll rallies.
Sunny Deol, was given a hand-pump by supporters at his roadshow in Punjab’s Gurdaspur, from where he will be contesting the Lok Sabha elections. While giving a politician a hand pump may be seen as odd, for Sunny Deol, it was a throwback to his 2001 blockbuster movie “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha”. Sunny Deol, in a scene in “Gadar”, uproots a hand pump from the ground and uses it to fight off a hostile crowd that was rushing to attack him. The much-celebrated scene in Gadar also has Sunny Deol’s famous dialogue “Hindustan zindabad tha, zindabad hai, zindabad rahega”.
Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted the “Hindustan zindabad tha, zindabad hai, zindabad rahega” dialogue as the caption for an image with the actor.
Sunny Deol has filed his nomination from Gurdaspur and is up against Congress candidate and sitting MP Sunil Jhakhar.
