Thane: Man poses as Crime Branch officer, arrested

Police said on Thursday that a man posed as an officer of the crime branch of the Mumbai Police and inspected a mall in Maharashtra to investigate the sale of narcotics.

He said that the accused, Kalpesh Vasant Patil (29), is a resident of Varaatak Nagar in Thane district. Police said that a case was registered against Patil at the Kapurbavadi police station on Wednesday and a case was registered against him under Section 170 (impersonation of a public servant) of the IPC.

According to the police, the accused, as an officer of the crime branch of the Mumbai police, went inside the mall and met his manager, saying that he was aware that narcotics were being sold in the complex.

Police said the man inspected some areas of the mall and said he would send a report to his superiors. He said the manager asked him to pay Rs 11,500, his son is unwell, he said.

Patil’s behavior aroused suspicion following which the manager called the local police, who confirmed that he was a fake officer and arrested him.
