Veteran theater critic Kamlakar Nadkarni passed away in Mumbai yesterday (Saturday) night. He was 89 years old. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. He was ill for the past few months.
He started writing theater reviews from Devidas Telang’s fortnightly ‘Nandi’. After that, he did a theater review in the weekly ‘Lokprabha’. Later after joining ‘Maharashtra Times’ he did theater and film reviews in Maharashtra Times till his retirement.
Nadkarni worked as a writer, director and performer in Sudha Karamkar’s ‘Little Theatre’, a children’s theater organization for the first few years.
Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad honored him with ‘Jeevan Gaurav Award’ in the year 2019. He was honored with six awards as an outstanding theater examiner. Books written by Nadkarni are Mahanagari Natak, Raja Chhatrapati (Children’s Drama), Dramatic Natak.
Nadkarni’s writing style created a readership of his own. Some audience used to decide whether to watch a play or a movie by reading the reviews written by them.
