Pune Goes High-Tech! Double-Decker Flyovers with Integrated Metro Lines Launched!
PUNE. In a major move to permanently rid the citizens of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad from grueling traffic congestion, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari performed the grand stone-laying (bhoomi pujan) ceremony of three highly ambitious elevated highway projects today.
Once completed, these three mega-projects are expected to completely resolve the traffic crisis within Pune city as well as its surrounding major industrial corridors.
The 3 Major Elevated Highways Launched
Pune-Shirur Elevated Expressway: Spanning a total length of 53.4 km, this project features a 35 km long 4-lane elevated road. Directly beneath it, a 4-lane parallel ground-level service road will be constructed to manage local traffic.
Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur Elevated Highway: With a total length of 53.20 km, it includes a 26 km elevated stretch. This route is set to act as a major game-changer for the region’s massive industrial belt.
Hadapsar-Yawat Elevated Highway: Covering a total distance of 31 km, this stretch will feature a unique 6-lane elevated road running above a 6-lane ground-level road. This will slash travel times by at least 50 minutes, leading to massive fuel savings and a significant drop in vehicular pollution.
A First in India: New Financial Model to Fetch ₹950 Crore for Government
The standout feature of these highway projects is the implementation of a pioneering Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated:
“Under this new model, the government will not just rely on routine toll revenue. Instead, it is receiving upfront funding from the selected concessionaires. Accordingly, the state government will directly receive ₹500 crore from the first project, ₹300 crore from the second, and ₹150 crore from the third. This total upfront pool of ₹950 crore will be utilized effectively for land acquisition.”
Double-Decker Model: Cutting Future Metro Costs by 40%
The structural design of the Pune-Shirur and Hadapsar-Yawat routes is highly cutting-edge. Both highways will feature a ‘Double-Decker’ engineering model where the metro line will be built directly on top of the elevated highway structures. This integrated alignment will save up to 40% of the construction cost for future metro expansions. While the official timeline for all three projects is set at 4 years, authorities have directed the developers to expedite the work ahead of schedule due to the efficiency of the BOT model.
Big Announcements on Purandar Airport and Pune’s Future Growth
Purandar Airport: Land acquisition for the Purandar Airport is progressing rapidly. The state government aims to wrap up the tendering process and kickstart ground operations within this year. Comprehensive road and metro connectivity will be ready before the airport becomes operational.
Long-Term Urban Planning: Keeping the future demands of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad in mind, long-term master plans are being mapped out for drinking water supplies, sewage treatment plants, and equitable water distribution.
Global Hub for Deep-Tech: Highlighting Pune’s economic graph, the Chief Minister emphasized that Pune is rapidly evolving as a global hub for engineering, startups, and deep-tech. These new structural assets will provide a rocket-speed boost to the city’s economic growth.
