Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s ward number dispute now in Supreme Court, hearing on May 18

Mumbai, Dt. 11
The dispute over Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s government’s decision to increase the number of wards from 236 to 227 for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections has now reached the Supreme Court.
Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s group challenged the decision of the High Court in the matter in the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
The petition will be heard on May 18. Last month, the High Court rejected the petitions challenging the Shinde government’s decision stating that the decision of the Shinde government to restore the number of wards is in accordance with the order of the Supreme Court and is valid.
These petitions were filed by Shiv Sena corporators Raju Pednekar and Sameer Desai. Pednekar has challenged this decision of the High Court in the Supreme Court.
Last year, the Supreme Court had ordered to take up the election program of local self-government bodies whose term had expired. Moreover, it was also clarified to consider the ward number before 11th March 2022.
