President rejects mercy plea of Nirbhaya convict Mukesh Singh

President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the mercy plea of Mukesh Singh on Friday, one of the four people convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, Sources said. The rejection came soon after the Union Home Ministry sent the petition to the President on Friday morning.

The woman’s father told that after the news came in rejection, it was a good thing. Our hopes have increased after the disappointing news. Mukesh filed his mercy petition two days ago.

The four accused Mukesh (32), Vinay Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) were to be hanged in Tihar jail on January 22 at 7 am. Issuing his death warrant on 7 January.

However, the Delhi government informed the High Court during a hearing that the convicts would not be hanged on that day, as a mercy petition was filed by Mukesh.

A Home Ministry official said on Friday morning, “The Ministry of Home Affairs has forwarded Mukesh Singh’s mercy petition to the President. The ministry has again rejected the recommendation of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.” Mukesh Singh’s mercy petition was sent to the home ministry on Thursday, a day after Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal’s office rejected the Delhi government’s recommendation.
