Indian Boxers bang big numbers with 1 Gold and 4 silvers at Boxing Tournament in Finland

Indian men boxers created quite a name for themselves by collecting a rich haul of 8 medals at the 38th GeeBee Boxing Tournament in Helsinki, Finland. India finished their campaign on a high with one gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

Services boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht grabbed the gold medal in the 56kg category after getting the better of his Indian counterpart Mohammed Hussamuddin, who had to settle for silver in the summit clash.

In a rare all-Indian final, a gritty Bisht was up against Hussamuddin in the 56kg summit clash, both the boxers being from the Services Sports Control Board.

Bisht put up a flawless performance to outclass his opponent 5-0 in a thrilling final. The Uttarakhand boxer gave an audacious display overcoming a cut sustained above his right eye to secure his maiden international gold in the bantamweight category.

Signing off with silver medals were three-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa (60kg), rookie Govind Sahani (49kg), Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Mohammed Hussamuddin (56kg) and Dinesh Dagar (69kg).

While Sahani started off strongly against Thailand’s Thitisan Panmod, but lost 3-2, Thapa in 60kg category, lost 1-4 to local Arslan Khataev. On the other hand, Dagar, was defeated by Commonwealth Games gold-medallist England Pat McCormack in the finals.

Finishing off with bronze medals were Sachin Siwach (52kg), Sumit Sangwan (91kg) and Naveen Kumar (+91kg) after their respective semi-final losses.
