Slating a landmark history, upholding the dignity of Muslim women; India inscribed a milestone as the parliament passed the Triple Talaq Bill. All efforts paid off, the President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent making the Triple Talaq Bill a law.
The law comes into force retrospectively from 19th September 2019. A Gazette Notification to this effect was issued on Wednesday. The Parliament had passed the bill on Tuesday. Triple Talaq Bill which was passed by the Parliament on Tuesday, prescribes up to three years imprisonment for Muslim men giving instant triple talaq to their wives.
Parliament approved the bill that makes instant triple talaq a criminal offence, after the contentious legislation was passed by Rajya Sabha. Lok Sabha had passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill last week.
Clearing off all hurdles, the bill that that makes instant triple talaq a criminal offence and a provision of three years jail for the guilty gets an approving nod from Rajya Sabha. In an historic victory for the Modi government and with a landmark voting, the bill was passed with 99 votes in favour and 84 against.
The Triple Talaq bill was tabled in the house of the Parliament by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 aims to ban and criminalise the practice of divorce among Muslims by simply stating Talaq three times.
