Sewage from slum areas in South Mumbai will be treated and reused Construction of 4 processing centers under the project is in progress

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has undertaken a pilot project to process and reuse the waste water in the Sea Coast Marg Project area and the slums near the sea. Treatment centers are being set up at 4 places under the project and through this around 4 lakh 85 thousand liters of waste water will be processed daily.

The water treated by the 4 treatment plants in the pilot project will be used in toilets and parks in the area. The work of the processing center at Shivaji Nagar is now in the final stage and the work of the remaining 3 processing centers is also going on at a fast pace.

The capacity of the treatment plant at Shivaji Nagar is to treat 50 thousand liters (KLD) of sewage and the capacity of the Darya Sagar treatment plant is 35 thousand litres. The capacity of the treatment centers at Darya Nagar and Markandeshwar Mandir area will be to process 1 lakh liters and 3 lakh liters of waste water respectively per day, informed Shashi Bala, Head of Business Development Department and Director of Smile Council.

Shashi Bala said that the project ‘Integrated Wetland Technology’ based on the technology developed by the startup ‘Emergy Enviro’ of Indra Kant Jha, an ex-student of IIT Mumbai, has been taken up through the Smile Council in order to process and reuse the waste water in the area.
