Supreme Court Rebukes Rahul Gandhi in Savarkar Insult Case
The Supreme Court has rebuked Rahul Gandhi for his remarks about Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The court warned that if such comments are repeated, it will take serious note of them.
The hearing took place before a bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Manmohan. Advocate Nripendra Pandey had filed a case in a Sessions Court in Uttar Pradesh, alleging that Rahul Gandhi deliberately insulted Savarkar during a public meeting in Akola, Maharashtra. The court had issued a summons to Rahul Gandhi, who then approached the Allahabad High Court. However, the High Court rejected his plea.
The Supreme Court expressed displeasure over Rahul Gandhi’s reference to Savarkar as “Apology Veer.” The bench admonished him, saying that mocking freedom fighters is unacceptable. The court also questioned Gandhi’s awareness by asking his counsel, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, whether Rahul Gandhi knew that Mahatma Gandhi, too, had used the phrase “your faithful servant” while corresponding with the British.
