Central Govt action against e-commerce companies orders stop advertisement of ‘seatbelt alarm’ device

Mumbai, Dt. 13
The central government has asked five major e-commerce companies, Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Snapdeal and ShopQz, to stop selling and advertising devices that are used to turn off the car’s alarm if the driver and the co-passenger are not wearing seat belts.
After the Centre’s order, a total of 13,118 such advertisements were withdrawn, of which around eight thousand were of Amazon and four to five thousand of Flipkart were in various places.
Nowadays it is mandatory by law for the driver and co-passengers to wear seat belts while sitting in the car. In many modern new cars, the alarm continues to sound if the occupants do not fasten their seat belts. Certain devices are designed to prevent this alarm from sounding or to turn it off even if the passenger is not wearing a seat belt. These devices were advertised and sold by these e-commerce companies.
The central government had blamed that these devices, which turn off the alarm of not using the seat belt, are playing with the lives of passengers and their sale and advertisement fall under the heading of unfair trade practice. The Central Consumer Protection Authority has taken this action for violation of the Consumer Protection Act.
