Winds of Change! In phase III, Kerala polls highest in 30 years with 77.6%

India is experiencing the scorching heat, not just because of summer, but also because of Lok Sabha elections are undergone. Yesterday, India voted for 3rd phase of elections. This phase was one of the largest phases of elections.

In this phase 3, Kerala witnessed substantial polling with 77.68%, the highest in the last 30 years. In the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state, where ruling LDF and opposition UDF are fighting fiercely for acquiring maximum seats. 8 out of 20 constituencies in the state recorded over 80 % voter turnout.

The strength of the electorate is 2.61 crore. As per the final figures released by the Election Commission, 77.68% electors had turned up in 24,970 polling stations across the state to cast their votes.

A total of 227 candidates were fighting elections in the state, with 23 women contestants.

The most prestigious and hot constituency, Wayanad, witnessed the record voting of 80.31% which is more than 2014 elections (73.25%). Very interestingly, Wayanad had 20 candidates, which is maximum in the state, with lowest no. of candidates, 6 are fighting for power in Alathur from Palakkad district.

This election is a crucial one for both of the parties, ruling CPI (M) as well as, opposition Congress-led UDF in all Lok Sabha elections, which is essentials to crack down the decades-long bipolar politics.

The most important constituencies, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and, Thrissur, are most interesting fights where BJP-led NDA put a most challenging fight.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who contested from Wayanad in addition to Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, his party colleague Shashi Tharoor, BJP leader Kummanam Rajasekharan (both Thiruvananthapuram) and Union Minister Alphons Kannamthanam (Ernakulam) were among prominent candidates in the fight.

Kannur in north Kerala noted the highest polling with 83.05%, while the prominent Thiruvananthapuram constituency, where the polling touched 73.45%, the lowest of all. The most critical constituency, Pathanamthitta, due to Sabarimala issue, polled 74.19% vote.
