Mumbaikars now to get rid of traffic issues..! Cabinet green signals Phase 3A of the extant transport project..!

Thinking of Mumbai, the first impression we obtain is that of traffic, transport issue and the very famous local railway connections..! Mumbai as a metropolitan city, is scaling new endeavors in terms of infrastructural developments and improvements with the help of aspiring projects that lead in process of being delivered in near future.

One such being the Mumbai Urban Transport Project formulated by MMRDA, viewing to curb the transport situation in the city. The Union Cabinet on Thursday stepped up to approve the third phase of the same, likely to be completed in coming five years in collaboration with the state government, Indian Railways, MMRDA, BMC and World Bank.

“Phase-3A of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project costing Rs 30,849 crores with completion cost of Rs 33,690 crores has been approved by the government”, said Finance Minister Arun Jaitley addressing the media in presence of Ravi Shankar Prasad and Sitanshu Kar.

“The project benefits, seamless travel for long distance suburban passengers by extending & creating corridors along with the segregation of suburban rail operation on Central & Western Railways”, he added meanwhile.

The Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), is a project formulated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to bring about improvement in the traffic and transport situation in the Mumbai metropolitan region with the assistance of the World Bank.

Phase I of the project began in 2002 and was completed in 2011. The total estimated cost of the MUTP Phase I was ₹4,526 crore. Most of the money was spent on railway projects, while less than a fourth was spent on road projects.

The phase 3 project however included a fast corridor from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Panvel with a connection to the proposed new Navi Mumbai International Airport, extending the Harbour Line to Borivali and multiple additional tracks being laid on existing routes.
