Gujarat State’s Step Towards Uniform Civil Code

Cabinet’s approval for setting up committee for implementation
The state cabinet has approved setting up of a committee for implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the State of Gujarat. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Samracha informed that this committee will be formed under the chairmanship of a retired judge of the High Court and it will have three to four members.

Assembly elections are likely to be announced in the state of Gujarat at any moment. Against this backdrop, this decision was taken in the cabinet meeting held on Saturday

The two states have already announced the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. That are Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh Now, with this decision taken by the Gujarat State Cabinet, Gujarat has become the third state in the country to take steps to implement the Uniform Civil Code.

The policy of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Bharatiya Janata Party is that there should be a uniform civil law in the country. Some organizations and political parties, including the Muslim Personal Law Board, oppose the Uniform Civil Code.
Meanwhile, the Congress has criticized that this decision of BJP is a play made for elections.
