First time in 12 years, EU speaks on Kashmir issue, calls Pakistan ‘perpetrator of terror’

In yet another miserable failure for Pakistan in its bid to internationalise Kashmir issue, the European Union (EU) on Wednesday sided India asserting that India and Pakistan should resolve the issue through direct dialogue. Majority of the EU Parliament members spoke in favour in India and termed Pakistan an ‘ambiguous’ country.

For the first time in 12 years, the parliament took up the Kashmir issue on September 17. EU Minister urged India and Pakistan to resolve Kashmir issue through dialogue, seeking a peaceful and political solution, respectful of the interests of the Kashmiri population on both sides of the Line of Control. This is the only way to solve the long-time dispute to avoid instability and insecurity in the region.

Speaking at the General Assembly meeting, EU stressed on the point that there was no point of third-party mediation. Ryszard Czarnecki, European Conservatives & Reformists Group, Poland said, “India is the greatest democracy of the world. We need to look at terrorist acts that took place in India, J&K. These terrorists didn’t land from moon. They were coming from neighbouring country. We should support India.”

Siding India on the Kashmir issue, Fulvio Martusciello, Group of European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), Italy said, “Pakistan has threatened to use nuclear arms. Pakistan is somewhere where terrorists have been able to plan bloody terrorist attacks in Europe without mentioning tremendous human rights violation in Pakistan.”

The final remarks on the issue will be made by Finland, which holds the current presidency in the EU Parliament. The European Parliament is the legislative branch of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. It is currently composed of 751 Members of European Parliament (MEPs)and his headquartered at the Belgian capital Brussels.

India’s biggest supporting members at the General Assembly were from Spain, France, Poland and the UK. Taking a tough stand against terror, the members called Pakistan a ‘perpetrator of terror’ and accused it of carrying out terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. It further stated that it will monitor the situation and make sure that the situation does not escalate.
