The decision to improve the number of nominated members was taken in the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday in order to increase the quality in the functioning of Municipal Corporations. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde presided over the meeting.

Accordingly, ten nominated members in Section 5(1)(b) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act and Section 5(2)(b) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act shall not exceed ten percent or ten municipal members,

It was decided in principle to amend whichever was less. At present, the number of Municipal Corporation members to be nominated is five.

Persons having experience, efficiency and knowledge of civil administration and possessing the prescribed qualifications as per rules made by the Government are selected as nominated members to assist the urban administration in the state.

This decision was taken considering the need to increase the number of nominated members with a view to qualitatively enhance the functioning of the Municipal Corporations by utilizing the knowledge of the nominated members so appointed.
