Three killed after two freight trains collide in MP

Three people died after two goods trains collided near a village in Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday morning. Singrauli Additional Superintendent of Police Pradeep Shinde told PTI that the coal-laden train going from Uttar Pradesh’s Amalori mine towards Uttar Pradesh took off at around 4.40 am.

Thirteen wagons and one engine of one of the trains derailed after a collision. The official said that so far three bodies have been removed from the engine. The deceased were yet to be identified, adding that according to initial findings, the bodies could be of two drivers and a point-man.

Shinde said that the track on which the accident occurred, is managed by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to transport coal from Madhya Pradesh. Initially, it appears that the accident may have been caused by an error on the part of the drivers or due to some malfunction in the signaling, he said.

The official said that the accident did not affect the rail passenger traffic, as it happens exclusively on the track used by NTPC to haul coal for power generation. Meanwhile, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of East Central Railway, Rajesh Kumar said in a statement that the Indian Railways had nothing to do with the accident.

He said the accident occurred in the Meera Go Round (MGR) system, wholly owned and operated by NTPC, Rihand.
