Specially trained ‘Shakthi’ to support women in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam has many educational institutions and offices of different type of companies. These workplaces have many women employees who have to work all shifts. The initiative was taken to provide security to women and girls. The security of these women is the priority of Andhra Pradesh Police. Specially trained police employee in navy blue uniform is alert and ready to protect their friends who are local residents, working or studying women in many fields.

Launching the initiative, Director-General of Police R.P. Thakur said that ‘Shakthi’ teams would work to check crimes against women such as eve-teasing, molestation, bigamy, fraudulent marriage, adultery and workplace harassment among others.

Women police team ‘Shakthi’ was launched in Visakhapatnam yesterday. The 35-member team has woman ASIs, head constables, police constables & home guards. The team has been provided 25 vehicles, including two four-wheelers. The vehicles are equipped with VHF sets, man-pack, tabs for GPS tracking facilities and pepper sprays.

An Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) is a non-gazetted police officer ranking above a police head constable.

In what is seen as a shot in the arm of the law enforcement to ensure women safety, women police teams titled ‘Shakthi’ were launched as part of ‘Mahilalaku Cheruvaga’ programme in the city on Thursday.

“The Shakthi teams will work from morning to night (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.). The officials will be in direct contact with the police control rooms. They will be attending to the complaints received through the helpline services such as ‘Dial 100’ and 1090. The team members will reach out to the victims as quickly as possible,” the DGP told the media here.

Mr Thakur also suggested that the City Police expanded the service timings of the ‘Shakthi’ teams, making them available even late in the night, keeping in view of the women who work in the late shifts at their workplaces.

“All the 35 members of the team have undergone special training sessions at PTC Vizianagaram in vehicle driving, mechanism, self-defence and legal knowledge on crime against women,” City Police Commissioner Mahesh Chandra Laddha said.
