Opaque rains in Gujarat’s Vadodara, force shut down of airport, cancellation of few trains and heavy water logging

Post heavy rain lashes in the Konkan belt, the South-Central Gujarat cities on Wednesday received a staggering 442 mm of rainfall in just 12 hours, forcing shut down of airport, cancellation of a few trains leading to heavy water logging.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani calling a meeting in the evening to review the situation in Vadodara and other areas, asked IAS officers to rush to the city to provide guidance to the local administration in tackling the situation. He further urged people in low lying areas to cooperate with district administration during evacuation.

Referring to the latest forecast by the IMD, several parts of Gujarat, including Saurashtra, are set to receive heavy to very heavy rains during the next two days. Authorities meanwhile have asked all the schools in Vadodara city to remain closed today.

The Vadodara airport on the outskirts of the city is also temporarily shut down and the domestic flights are cancelled, as confirmed by the airport authorities. However, the Western Railways affirmed of some trains passing through the city to either remain cancelled or divert due to heavy water logging.

“Between 8.00 am and 8.00 pm, Vadodara received 442 mm of rainfall, the highest in Gujarat on Wednesday. Of this, 286 mm of rain fell in just four hours ending at 8.00 pm”, read the statement state government.
