One nation, One Driving License..! Centre modifies driving license format to laminated card without smart card

Amid rising chaos of license distribution that had been stopped for months in the wake of unsettled applications in conventional method, the Ministry of Road Transport has decided to modify the format of driving licenses to laminated card without chip or smart card type driving licences.

Prescribing a common standard format and design of the Driving Licence for whole of the country which includes the placement of information, standardization of fonts, the Centre through its flagship application called SARATHI has developed a common countrywide database of all driving license holders.

“Almost 15 crore driving license records are available in its central repository. The SARATHI application has the feature to identify duplicate records in real time online basis and access information about the challans if any, which facilitates the licencing authority that delinquent drivers do not get a duplicate driving licence”, Nitin Gadkari said while addressing the delegates in the Rajya Sabha.

“With this, the renewed license, vehicle’s registration certificates will have a new look. The RC will clearly have to mention its chassis number and emission norm clearly on the RC”, he added further.

A report by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways further confirms that over 32,000 new driving licenses are issued every day in India and over 43,000 vehicles are registered every day. The implementation of the new process will see the issuance of new driving licenses and anyone going in for renewal or re-registration will automatically get the new DLs and RC for its vehicles.
