Hacked, stabbed and set on fire; female police officer, mother of three blazed up by colleague Mohammed Ayaz in Kerala

In what is called as a gruesome and coward act, the value of humanity and morality in people at times fade away. Benefitting for their own, selfish mentality and dwelling in unwanted activities have always led people to the wrong path with cruel intentions taking a major toll. Although Kerala has been a victim to such heinous acts in the past, these incidents of burning up has become quite a regular attempt in Kerala.

In a similar instance, this heart-wrenching story of a women constable brutally hacked and stabbed with sword will surely give you goosebumps. The incident took place in a broad daylight, as her male colleague Mohammed Ajaz set her on fire in Alappuzha district of Kerala on Saturday.

The female police officer Soumya Pushpakaran (31), a female police officer, died on the spot while Ajaz (33), the male cop sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to the Alappuzha Medical College. Unfortunately, this is the third such incident where a woman is set ablaze in public area in the state of Kerala.

Apparently, Soumya, the female officer was overseeing the Student Police Cadet (SPC) test in the Vallikkunnam police station area limits, was returning home on her scooter after giving secretariat assistant examination around 3.30 pm. Ajaz, in a Maruti Suzuki Celerio, followed her and hit her vehicle in the Naluvila area.

From the impact, Soumya fell down and ran for safety to a nearby home where Ajaz chased her with a machete and hacked her several times. As the female officer was crying for her safety and locals gathered, a frightened Ajaz poured petrol on her and set her on fire. Soumya died on the spot while Ajaz reportedly sustained minor injuries. The locals promptly caught Ajaz and handed him over to the police. Ajaz is an officer with the traffic police station in Aluva in Ernakulam district.

Soumya had been working at the station for a little over years and was well respected for her nice behaviour and conduct. She is survived by her husband, who works in the Gulf, and three children, eldest of whom is just three years old. Ajas is unmarried and was on leave since 9 June.

Similar incidents have been taking place in Kerala since quite a few months. But unfortunately, no stringent action is coming in limelight. Earlier, a 21-year-old woman was burnt alive in Thrissur in April. The victim, an engineering student at the Axis Engineering College in Kodakara, was at her house when the accused Nidheesh barged in, set her on fire and tried to escape. Similarly, in March, Kavitha Vijaykumar, a 20-year-old student, was set on fire by her stalker, Ajin Reji Mathew, in Pathanamthitta. She sustained 65 per cent burn injuries and passed away eight days later.

Asserted as one of the most literate state of India, why are these incidents taking place? Why is the police in Kerala still numb? Why aren’t they taking stringent actions against people commiting such gruesome heinous crime?
