“Never bend your head, always hold it high”, is what he taught everyone through his deeds and acts..! The Great Indian warrior Shivaji Maharaj, and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan, carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. While fighting for the Maratha empire back in the 1674, he equally fought selflessly for the rights of people and women specially.
With the state of Maharashtra completely engaged in the celebrations of ShivJayanti amid the beats of Dhol-Tasha today, the nation alike buoyantly honours the king using social media. Here are tweet series from nationwide saluting the Chhatrapati.
“I bow to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti. A warrior for truth and justice, he is revered as an ideal ruler, devout patriot and is particularly respected by the poor and downtrodden. Jai Shivaji!”, hailed PM Narendra Modi citing the occasion. Meanwhile M Venkhaiah Naidu tweeted sharing his humble greetings, “The valued contribution of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for bravery, war strategy and nation-building will always be invigorating for Indians.”
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis tweeted saying ,”He is the architect of Hindavi Swaraj, the King of India in a united India, our adorable god, Rajdhiraj Chhatrapati of Maharashtra. Remembering him on his birth anniversary. Jai Shivaji”. “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was an epitome of courage, valour and compassion. He served the people by upholding truth and justice. Shivaji will always remain an inspiration for the people of India. I bow to him on his jayanti”, said Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Shivaji’s legacy was to vary by observer and time but he began to take on increased importance with the emergence of the Indian independence movement, as many elevated him as a proto-nationalist and hero of the Hindus. Over the course of his life, he engaged in both alliances and hostilities with the Mughal Empire, Sultanate of Golkonda, and Sultanate of Bijapur, as well as the English, Portuguese, and French colonial powers. His military forces expanded the Maratha sphere of influence, capturing and building forts, and forming a Maratha navy.
Shiv Jayanti is a festival and public holiday in Maharashtra, it being celebrated in a small extent outside Maharashtra. Some people celebrate this day by Hindu Calendar in Maharashtra. Shiv Jayanti was started by Lokmanya B G Tilak with the first event in Pune. Since then the festival expanded on a large scale.
