5 accused of murder & rape escape from Karjat jail

Five people escaped from Karjat jail in Raigad district of Maharashtra on Sunday evening for crimes like murder, rape and carrying weapons. The five were identified as Dnyaneshwar Tukaram Kolhe, Akshay Ramdas Raut, Mohan Kundalik More, Chandrakant Mahadev Raut, and Gangadhar Jagtap.

An official said that Dnyaneshwar was arrested under the Arms Act, while Akshay, Mohan, and Chandrakant are accused of murder and Gangadhar is accused of rape.

“He removed an iron grill from a vent on the roof of the district sub-jail in Karjat and escaped on Sunday evening. While one guard was stationed in the lock-up, three others were on duty in the perimeter of the jail when the incident occurred.

Inspector General (Law and Order) Miller Bharambe said that a case was registered under section 224 (a person’s own legal apprehension) of the IPC in the early hours of Monday. Special teams have been formed to capture them.
