UK Court further remands Nirav Modi in custody till May 24

A court on Friday remanded Mr corrupt Nirav Modi to further custody till May 24th. The court was hearing his extradition case in connection with the 13,500-crore rupees Punjab National Bank fraud. He was arrested last month and is currently lodged in a prison in London. He appeared before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court via video link from jail.

The hearing on May 24 will be a procedural one to meet the 28-day timeline for judicial custody in such cases in the UK. The case will then proceed to a full case management hearing where Modi will be produced in person.

On March 20, the Magistrate’s Court had taken stock of serious allegations levelled by the Indian investigative agencies through the Crown Prosecution Service. Opposing bail to Modi, the Crown Prosecution, on March 20, had told the UK Court that he had threatened a former employee, a witness in the bank fraud case, with dire consequences if he revealed any information.

The Prosecution also claimed that Modi had initially offered 2 million to the witness, Ashish, a director of one of the group companies owned by Modi. When the witness refused to accept the money, Modi threatened to kill him, the prosecution alleged. Friday’s hearing in Westminster Magistrate’s Court lasted for barely a minute. It was a procedural remand hearing, a hearing held after 28 days for an accused in custody.
