Remembering one of the pillars of our democracy ‘The Constitution’

Today is Constitution Day. On this day in 1949, the constitution was adopted which came into force on January 26, 1950, marking the beginning of a new era in the history of India.

On 19th November 2015, during the year-long celebration of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar, Government of India in a gazette notification declared November 26th as the Constitution Day.

The Constitution continues to be the nation’s guiding light on all matters connected with governance and jurisprudence. The founding fathers gave people one of the best Constitutions in the world and by displaying foresight, vision and a flexible approach, they accommodated various viewpoints and made it adaptable to the Indian situation.

During the Mann Ki Baat programme in All India Radio Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about constitution day and appealed the people to take forward the values enshrined in the constitution and ensure peace, progress and prosperity in the country.

The constitution has strengthened parliamentary democracy and has stood the test of times, even as it evolved through several amendments. The Constitution empowers the people as much as the people empower the Constitution.
