PM holds rally in poll-bound Mizoram, targets Congress for neglecting NE

Hitting hard at the Congress party during election campaign in Mizoram – the Northeastern state that is going to polls on November 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Congress party never respected the people and traditions of the northeast. It priority has always been political power, he said.

The BJP which is seriously contesting the assembly elections in this Christian-dominated tribal state of the region got a push in the last leg of electioneering when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed rallies on Friday at Lunglei, 170 km from Aizwal. He attacked the Congress for ‘insensitivity towards north east region, its people and their traditions’, ‘corruption’ and ‘inefficacy’.

Modi said that our country has now understood the Congress’ formula of divide and rule. That is why the Congress that once ruled the entire country is now restricted to a couple of states. He said that people of Mizoram has the golden opportunity to rid themselves of this Congress culture.

Referring to Congress leader Shashi Tharur’s remarks on the headgear, Modi said “I feel a deep sense of anguish when I see Congress leaders abuse traditions…. A few months ago, Congress leaders had insulted the north eastern headgear…called it ‘outlandish’. This is the real picture behind the tall talk Congress leaders come here and spout”.

He said that he hopes and ambitions of the people do not matter to the Congress. Their priority is power and not the people of Mizoram.

He appealed to the people of Mizoram to elect the BJP to speed up development of Mizoram and provide a corruption-free government. The double engine of BJP governments at both centre and the state will take Mizoram to new heights, he said.

Modi reiterated his commitment to development of North-east and said that in the last four years his government had developed every part of the region and helped it move past the culture of bandh, guns and blockades.
