According to the USGS, the epicenter was farther than 100 miles from a city and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. In the last 10 days, there have been eight earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater centred nearby. The area the quake struck is Kermadec Island, a volcanic archipelago which is prone to earthquakes.
The islands are a dependency of New Zealand and lie at the western edge of the Kermadec Trench with no permanent settlements. New Zealand’s Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Management however cleared New Zealand of a tsunami threat moments after issuing a beach warning.
