Connecting ancient threads between India and Thailand, Sawasdee PM Modi slates ‘New Vision’ for ‘New India’

“Relation between India and Thailand are not only betwixt governments, Governments have not even made them. History has made them”, affirmed Prime Mimister Narendra Modi while addressing the Indian community at the Sawasdee PM Modi event in Bangkok today.

“The relationships are of heart, of soul, of faith, of spirituality. The name of India is associated with the Jambudweep of the mythological period. Thailand was part of Suvarnabhumi”, he added.

Lauding Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn for recieveing India’s Padma Bhushan, PM said, “The affinity, the royal family of Thailand has for India, symbolizes our deep friendly and historical relations. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is an expert in Sanskrit language and has a deep interest in the culture”.

“I find familiarity in every particle of Thailand. I am able to discover a glimpse of Indianness in food here, in traditions, in faith, in architecture here”, he said adding that he was in Thailand to respect the new King and also to participate in the India-ASEAN Summit.

On his first official visit, the Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin marking the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and a Thai translation of Tamil classic ‘Tirukkural’, at the Sawasdee PM Modi event in Bangkok.

PM Modi is on an official visit to Bangkok to participate in the 16th ASEAN-India Summit on November 3. He will also attend the 14th East Asia Summit and the 3rd Summit meeting of nations negotiating a Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement on November 4.

Before departure to Bangkok, PM Modi had said today that India will consider whether its concerns and interests in trade in goods, services, and investments are being fully accommodated when he attends the meeting of the RCEP in Thailand.

While he was to hold bilateral meetings with a number of other world leaders present in Bangkok for related summit meetings, “The ASEAN-related summits are an integral part of our diplomatic calendar, and an important element in our Act East Policy. Our partnership with ASEAN is built around the key pillars of connectivity, capacity-building, commerce and culture,” he noted.
