The 74-year-old lawmaker from Puthupally will oversee the party affairs of Andhra Pradesh. A two-time Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy shares a good rapport with apex leadership of Congress party. According to media reports, the national leadership of Congress was annoyed with the performance of Congress during the 2014 general elections and state assembly polls under the leadership of Digvijaya Singh. In 2014, post bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Congress party had failed miserably in both Telugu states against the regional parties like TDP and TRS.

In another major development, a Young leader from Assam, Gaurav Gogoi will look after the states like West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands replacing senior Congress leader C.P.
