The BJP retained its hold on Wednesday by winning the positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation near Mumbai. Jyotsna Jasnale, the BJP candidate for the post of Mayor, defeated Anant Shirke of his only rival Shiv Sena by 55 votes over the latter’s 36.
BJP’s Hasmukh Gehlot became deputy mayor by defeating Shiv Sena’s Merlin D’Sa. Gehlot got 56 votes, while D’Sa got 35 votes.
Four corporators were absent during the voting in the 95-member house, including 62 BJP corporators, 10 from Congress, 22 from Shiv Sena and one Independent MLA.
Shiv Sena candidates had the support of the Congress.
