18 former Congress corporators of Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation disqualified for six years

During the hearing, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has decided to disqualify 18 former Congress corporators for six years who voted for the opposition candidate in the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Mayoral election.

The total strength of corporators in Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation is 90 and 47 corporators of Congress were elected in the corporation. After two and a half years i.e. in the election for the post of mayor on December 5, 2019, the Congress party announced the name of Rishika Raka as the official candidate. 18 corporators of the party rebelled against the name and formed a separate group.

Voted for Pratibha Patil, the contending candidate for the post of mayor. Despite having majority in the municipality, Congress was defeated. Congress leader Javed Dalvi filed a complaint with the Konkan Divisional Commissioner to disqualify 18 former corporators. In the suit before the Konkan Divisional Commissioner, the result was in favor of 18 former corporators. The five-year term of these corporators ended last year.

Javed Dalvi had appealed to the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde against the order given by the Konkan Divisional Commissioner.

On Monday, Chief Minister Shinde decided the matter by holding a hearing. In this, 18 former corporators were declared disqualified under Section 3 (1) (b) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Members Disqualification Act 1986, canceling the orders of the Konkan Commissioner. Chief Minister Shinde decided that these members have been disqualified for a period of 6 years from 31 December 2021 onwards.
