Upsetting news for cricket world! BCCI suspends Prithvi Shaw for doping violation

Cricket world is bit upset since yesterday as Indian Test opener Prithvi Shaw has been suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) till November 15, for a doping violation.

According to a BCCI release, Shaw had inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups. Shaw had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing program during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on February 22 this year in Indore.

His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline. Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In & Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances.

On July 16, Shaw was charged with the commission of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) under the BCCI Anti-Doping Rules (ADR) and provisionally suspended pending determination of the charge. Shaw responded to the charge but asserting that it was inadvertent, being caused by his ingestion of the over the counter cough syrup he had taken for his cough.

Although the BCCI showed satisfaction with Shaw’s explanation, according to rules, he was suspended for an eight-month period of Ineligibility started to run from March 16 so that it will end at midnight on November 15.

In another cases, Akshay Dullarwar of Vidarbha Cricket Association and Divya Gajaraj of Rajasthan team also have been suspended for doping violation.

India’s beloved former cricketman Harsha Bhogle, while commenting on the issue said that Indian cricket needs to handle Prithvi Shaw carefully and set him on the right path. This is a kid who has  achieved success the hard way.
