Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh told the Rajya Sabha on Friday that there will be no discrimination or unnecessary harassment in finalising the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, and that no Indian citizen will be left out.
“The process is fair and transparent. We are doing everything according to the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court. I assure everyone that no Indian citizen will be left out. Everyone will get a chance to apply for citizenship once we have a final list. They will have full rights,” Singh said.
He also alleged that an atmosphere of fear and communal disharmony was being created by vested interests on social media to “internationalise” the issue. TMC MP Derek O’ Brien said that the issue was no longer restricted to Assam, but concerned the entire nation.
