“Before we came to power, the country had a Metro rail network of 250 km, which has grown by over 400 km in the past four years. This is all because you people voted in a stable and strong government”, said PM Narendra Modi while flagging off the first phase of Nagpur Metro in Maharashtra.
“The Metro service was started by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. After his government, only a 250-km network was created till 2014. We added 400 km and are working on an 800-km network”, he said praising Nagpur Metro for being the fastest to be completed and the greenest one, using 65 per cent solar power of its needs.
“The entire project costs Rs 8,680 crore and the project will soon turn famous like Nagpur oranges,” Modi said, adding further that Metro work has generated 20,000 jobs in Nagpur.
Nitin Gadkari meanwhile stated that innovative and excellent work has been done in the Nagpur Metro project and that the work is qualitative, excellent and timely. “But, today my happiness for Nagpur metro is most compared to all these as Nagpur is my hometown,” he said expressing his happiness.
“I have laid foundation stone and inauguration ceremony of works worth Rs. 4 lakh crore in the last 15 days. Similarly, Rs. 1.25 lakh crore worth of works are expected to flourish in Lucknow”, he informed in presence of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis.
Regular services in the first phase, covering a distance of 13.5 km from Khapri to Sitabuldi stations, have been operational from today. The Nagpur metro project was started in June 2015 and it consists of two corridors. The entire project is expected to be completed by financial year 2019-20.
