Ahead of the crucial poll battle of 2019, Congress party appointed Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy as the in-charge of Andhra Pradesh. He will replace Digvijaya Singh who has been roped in to head the poll co-ordination committee for the prestigious Madhya Pradesh assembly later in this year.
The 74-year-old lawmaker from Puthupally will oversee the party affairs of Andhra Pradesh. A two-time Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy shares a good rapport with apex leadership of Congress party. According to media reports, the national leadership of Congress was annoyed with the performance of Congress during the 2014 general elections and state assembly polls under the leadership of Digvijaya Singh. In 2014, post bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Congress party had failed miserably in both Telugu states against the regional parties like TDP and TRS.
In another major development, a Young leader from Assam, Gaurav Gogoi will look after the states like West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands replacing senior Congress leader C.P. Joshi, former Union Minister from Rajasthan. A Congress lawmaker from Kaliabor Lok Sabha segment, Gogoi is the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
